Devised with streaming media services in mind, Smart DNS technology works by sending a device's DNS queries though a server in another part of the world. This re-routing process makes the device's internet activity appear as if it is stemming from the server's location, rather than its actual physical location.
As a result, services like Netflix, which make use of automatic region detection, are tricked into thinking the device is in that same part of the world. So, for example, if a PS4 user in the United Kingdom connects to a server in the United States, Netflix would think the user is in the US and load up the US content library.

Step-By-Step Smart DNS Setup
Once you have found a Smart DNS service which supports the streaming services and regions you wish to access, register for an account and you should be given new DNS settings. These settings must then be changed on the PS4 console and this can be done by following the instructions below:
- On the PS4's main menu, go to 'Settings', then 'Network' and select 'Set Up Internet Connection'.
- Choose 'Custom' and then select either 'Wi-Fi' or 'LAN', depending on how your PS4 connects to the internet.

PlayStation Network Setup
