Samsung Smart TV Smart DNS Services Compared
Samsung's Smart TVs are some of the most popular Smart TVs on the market today, allowing customers to make use of various online services on their television, including streaming video services like Netflix, Hulu Plus, the BBC iPlayer and many more.
The range of apps available on the device varies depending on where in the world a user is. Some services will only work in one particular region, while others will have a significantly different content library from one region to another. Smart DNS technology is, therefore, extremely useful, as it can increase the number of apps on offer and expand the range of content provided by many services.

Smart DNS
Smart DNS is a technology which was specifically designed for the purpose of region switching on online media services. Many websites and services automatically detect a customer's region via their internet settings and Smart DNS provides a way around this problem, disguising a user's true location.
The technology works be simply re-routing the user's DNS queries to a proxy server when using a supported website or service. As a consequence, the service is tricked into believing the customer is in the server's location, rather than their own location.
So, for example, connecting to a US-based server makes it appear as if the customer is in the United States, opening up a range of US-only content. In addition, unlike with other proxy services, Smart DNS does not cause any significant drop in internet speeds, making it ideal for streaming video content on a Smart TV.
Step-By-Step Smart DNS Setup
After signing up for a Smart DNS service, customers will be provided with new DNS settings, which must be input onto the device they wish to use. To do this on a Samsung Smart TV, follow the instructions below:
- Press the 'Menu' button on your Samsung Smart TV remote.
- On the menu that appears, scroll down and select 'Network' and then choose 'Network Settings'.
- On the next screen, your Samsung Smart TV will show you how your device is currently connected to the internet. Press 'Start'.
- If you are connected via a wireless network, you will need to choose your network and then enter your pass key. If you are connected via an Ethernet cable, this step does not apply to you.
- Your TV will now test that it is connected to the internet. Once the message confirms that you are connected, choose 'IP Settings'.
- Make a note of the IP address shown on this page.
- Scroll down to 'DNS Setting'. Make a note of your current DNS settings, in case you ever wish to revert back to them. Then enter the new DNS settings given to you by your Smart DNS service provider.
- Press the 'OK' button. After your Samsung Smart TV once again tests its internet connection, press 'Next' to save the settings and exit the setup.
IP Address Entry
Smart DNS services will also require your Smart TV's IP address in order to operate. With many services, your IP address is detected automatically if you log in via the web browser on your Smart TV. However, others require the IP address to be manually added to their database via their website.
If this is the case, your device's IP address can be found by following the step-by-step guide above, up to point number 6. Simply make a note of the IP address shown on that page and then enter it manually onto the Smart DNS provider's website, where required.
It is also worth noting that your TV's IP address can change from time to time, such as when a router is reset. In this event, the Smart DNS service will require your new IP address. If your service detects IP addresses automatically, you can simply log in again via the web browser and an option should appear, allowing you to update your internet settings. If your Smart DNS service requires manual IP entry, repeat the instructions in the previous paragraph.
Samsung Smart Hub Setup
Although the Smart DNS service will change the location your internet connection appears to be coming from, it will not automatically grant access to apps which are exclusive to that region. In order to do that, the Samsung Smart Hub region settings need to be manually changed. This can be achieved by doing the following:
- Press the 'Smart' button in the middle of your TV remote.
- Using the buttons on the remote, enter the following sequence: 'Fast Forward', '2', '8', '9', 'Rewind'.
- A menu entitled 'Internet Service Location Setup' should appear. On this menu, select the region you wish to use. For example, to make use of US apps like Hulu Plus, select 'United States'.
- On the terms and conditions page, select 'Agree'.
- Select 'OK' and allow your Smart TV to restart.
- Upon restarting, the TV should be set to your chosen region and the default apps for that region should automatically start to download.
You cannot have the apps from two regions saved to the device at the same time, so after switching regions, the Samsung Smart TV will remove the apps from your previous region. In order to download them again, you must use the instructions above to manually change region once more.
