Amazon Fire TV Smart DNS Services Compared

Amazon Fire TV is a digital media player, which has been designed to stream online content directly onto a HD television. The device, developed by Amazon, can be used to gain access to various internet-based video on demand services, including Amazon Instant Video and Netflix.

However, most streaming video apps use automatic region detection, with no ability to manually switch regions. This limits the range of content available to customers and potentially prevents them from accessing services if they are located outside of supported regions. Fortunately, Smart DNS can provide a solution.

Smart DNS

When using a Smart DNS service, a customer's connection to a streaming media website is sent via a proxy server. This redirection process essentially obscures the user's real location, making it seem as if their internet connection is originating from the server they are connected to. Through this method, streaming media services can be tricked.

For instance, if a European customer connects to a Smart DNS proxy server in North America, their internet connection will appear as if it is stemming from North America as well. As a result, sites like Netflix will automatically load up their American content library, which would usually be off-limits.

Smart DNS technology can be used with a wide range of devices and does not require software installation. Moreover, it does not cause internet connections to slow and only impacts the use of supported websites or apps, ensuring all other online activity remains unaffected.

Important Note

You may need to have a 1-click US address active in your Amazon account. If you do not have access to a valid address and payment method, you may find that you are unable to make full use of Smart DNS. The settings can be adjusted by signing in to Amazon, going to the 'Your Account' section and clicking '1-Click Settings'.

In addition, you will need to change the country settings on the account. For example, if you are using Smart DNS to access the US region, you will need to go to your Amazon account, click on the 'Manage Your Content and Device' link, go to 'Country Settings' and select 'United States'.

Find Router IP Address

The first step of the setup process involves finding your router's IP address and writing it down. Instructions for doing this on a PC or Mac can be found below.

Windows

  1. Open the program command prompt.
  2. Enter "ipconfig" without quotes and press enter.
  3. The IP address shown for "default gateway" is likely your router's IP address.

Mac OSX

  1. Open up 'System Preferences' and go to 'Network'.
  2. Click on 'Advanced'.
  3. Select 'TCP/IP' and the router's IP address should be displayed.

Step-By-Step Smart DNS Setup

Once you have identified a suitable service and registered for an account, you will be given new DNS settings. These settings need to be input onto the device(s) you wish to use Smart DNS with. To do this on the Amazon Fire TV device, follow the steps below.

  1. Go to 'Settings', followed by 'Systems' and choose 'Wi-Fi'.
  2. Select your Wi-Fi network, then press the button with three horizontal lines.
  3. Press the 'Select' button, then click on your Wi-Fi network.
  4. Enter your Wi-Fi password, then choose 'Advanced'.
  5. For the 'IP Address', enter your router's IP address, but replace any numbers after the final dot with "50". For example, "192.168.0.1" would become "192.168.0.50".
  6. For the 'Default Gateway', enter your router's IP address.
  7. For 'Network Prefix Length', input "24" and press 'Next'.
  8. In the 'DNS' field(s), insert the settings provided by your Smart DNS service.

After completing this section, you should restart your Amazon Fire TV before proceeding to the next stage.

IP Address Entry

The final step involves registering your external IP address with your Smart DNS service, so that it can be added to the approved database. If you have a web browser installed, you may be able to do this from your Amazon Fire TV device by signing in to your Smart DNS account and clicking an activation link.

However, with many Smart DNS providers, an IP address has to be manually input. Using any device connected to the same network as your Amazon Fire TV, Google "my ip address" and write the number down. Visit your Smart DNS provider's website and follow their instructions for adding the address to their "whitelist". All IP addresses on the same network should be automatically added to the approved database, including your Amazon Fire TV's.

It should be noted that this process will have to be repeated each and every time your external IP address changes. Once the address has been registered, you are ready to utilise Smart DNS. Your desired region can be switched from within your Smart DNS client area.
